Most people want to leave the world a better place when they’re gone. If you believe in this goal, what does it look like for you?
I am reminded of a story. While walking on the beach after a great storm in Hawaii an older gentleman saw a young girl throwing starfish back into the sea. He asked what she was doing and she said saving the starfish. He commented what does it matter there are so many of them washed up on the beach. Her comment made an impression. I may not save them all but I can save this one as she threw it back into the sea.
Through our efforts, no matter how little or small you can make a difference in someone’s life. Your small effort can also make a huge difference in the lives of others, however my experience is that you are also changed by the experience.
I often tell the story of a mission trip I took to Mexico. We went to build a house for a needy family. The charity organization we worked with required the new home participants to buy the land for their home. This took everything the family had.
Upon arriving at the project site, we would often find the family’s current house nothing but a shelter made up of cardboard boxes, spare pieces of metal siding or other materials. Clearly survival was their most important goal.
Our church had purchased the materials and in one week we assembled a 20 foot by 20 foot concrete block home with two doors and four windows and a precast roof. The family would work with us as we created this precious gift. I don’t know who had the greatest emotional experience on Friday when we gave the keys to the new homeowners, the receivers or the builders.
You too have the opportunity to create such an event. Our business may not have the same emotional result as giving a family a home, but through your efforts, you can help a family create additional income and have hope for their future.
For 20 years our church kept going back to the same small barrio to build homes, sometimes building two in a particular year. What was impactful was how these lives were affected by our gift of a simple house. Some expanded their homes, all kept them up however most important, they were able to improve their lives and the lives of others in their community.
Yes it may be just one starfish you save, but you never know how many more they will help.
For many, our Amway business is hope and an opportunity for improvement. We often focus on ourselves, but helping others is the core principle of this business. The more people you help create a business, the more fun and ultimately money you create for yourself. Just like the home building experience, I don’t know who gets the most out of the business, those we help or ourselves.
Make no mistake, these are no small achievements, they have far-reaching impact, and should be seen as such.
So create and build a business to do just that: help people with effective personal life planning and goal setting, training leaders and managers to more expertly grow their teams and deliver motivational messages to audiences large and small. Through your small efforts, you may be helping many others.
ACTIONS FOR YOU
Get started by introducing the business plan to those at work, in the neighborhood, at your church. Build teams. The faster you accomplish this sharing of the business concept, the more people will join and the greater the team, however most important, the greater the impact you will have.
And it all starts with you. As Gandhi said: “Be the change you seek.”
My suggestion: Get moving. And if you’re already moving… move faster, bigger.
Stephen Covey said winners begin with the end in mind. To that point, wouldn’t an ideal ‘end’ be to lay on your deathbed proud of the impact you made… rather than regretful you never got started?
