Chapter ten of “The Magic of Thinking Big” is about getting the action habit. David Schwartz talks about how leaders get things done. Simply put, “Every big job requires a person who thinks action.”
He shares some stories on how people get locked into their own limitations, wanting for everything to be perfect before they start a task. Leadership is getting started and then proactively dealing with the challenges that come along the way. Tom Peters, a notable business author, describes this process as “Ready, Fire, Aim”.
If you were planning a road trip to California, would you wait for a confirmation that all of the roads were clear, the weather was sunny, and there were no delays – OF COURSE NOT!
So why do people wait to take action based on the premise that everything has to be perfect?
Chapter ten includes a number of examples where people failed to take action. Common responses of those who failed to action include, “I had that idea and could have made a fortune”, or “if only I had ……” Have you ever heard yourself say that?
He speaks of FEAR (he calls it Fictional Evidence Appearing Real) and how action overcomes fear. One of his examples is making a phone call. The mind works toward undermining our courage, yet once we get started, the action overcomes the fear.
People know what they need to accomplish for improvement in their life, but their lack of action is the limitation between having a better life; or continuing on with the current “make do” life.
When I started my first business I had no idea what would be the outcome, all I knew was that I wanted to work for myself. Years later my banker asked me wasn’t I concerned about starting out on my own, having no income to support myself or worse potentially failing and having to pay back the business debt? My response was I never thought of it from that perspective, I started into action and knew I would figure it out.
ACTIONS FOR YOU
We all know the steps to building the Amway business. The steps are simply being CORE. These same principles are the basic building blocks for life in general and I encourage using them to create your life’s foundation.
C – Listen to CEP – listen to a coach, a mentor, a way to improve. Listening to CDs of those who have been successful is one way to keep your attitude adjusted in the right frame of mind. This works with Amway or life in general.
O – be a 100% user – Ordering product from yourself is important but also demonstrates to others that you believe in what you preach. Every core user can easily reach 150 PV per month – start small if you have to, but make it your habit to reach that minimum level for being core.
R - Reading is the most powerful tool. When you read, your mind is listening to what you are reading. It focuses the entire mind on what is happening. If you cannot read the suggested 10 pages a day, read just 15 minutes a day from a motivational book.
E – Share your business with others at least Eight times per month. When you go to a good movie or restaurant, you talk with others about how you liked them. What we have is the best vehicle for people to take control of their life or future – share it and find that most people want what you have – so share it.
So - What is your plan of action to help improve your family life and the lives of others?
